I am writing this on Labor Day. Consider these sobering statistics. 1/3 of Americans say “I hate my job.” 2/3 of your fellow citizens labor in the wrong career. www.CNNMONEY.com reports that 8 out of 10 Americans want a new job and 1 in 10 just want a job period.
Most suicides occur on Sunday night. Most heart attacks occur on Monday morning. Countless commuters begrudge the 83,000 hours their jobs take from their lives.
I’m currently in a series called “What Will Wreck Your Life.” Anything we look to do for ourself that only God can do, is an idol. They usually are not bad things, they just become idols when we make them the ultimate thing. A favorite quote because I know it to be true—-“The devil doesn’t tempt us with bad things but with good things that are not good enough.”
Work can be an idol. We certainly have sacrificed so much for it. Work can also be meaningful, purposeful and life giving. We were created to partner with God in His creation work.
So celebrate work, enjoy a well earned retirement, and above all never forget Jesus’ words: “Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Brave Journey,
Bill
