The eyes of the world have been on the summer Olympics in Paris. I think of the training and discipline that world class champions put themselves through so that the rest of their life they will know they were Olympic champions. Do you consider the word “disciple” and “discipline” come from the same word?
The Bible is filled with sports metaphors. After all, Olympic-style games have been around a long time–
Wrestling (Ephesians 6:12)
Running (Hebrews 12:1-2, 2 Timothy 4:7)
Shot put (2 Samuel 17)
Paul compares the Christian life to a race he was running. The goal was not a temporary crown but maturity and Christ-likeness.
That is one crown we all can one day claim.
