So much has already been said and written, and sadly it only seems to communicate already fixed views.
Our nation once again finds the news broadcasting yet another shooting reflecting political violence, and lost in all of it is the tragedy of wives, husbands, children who have lost their loved ones.
Two words I continue to champion and believe are so lacking in our public and private discourse—-HUMILITY and RESPECT. Every person we meet, EVERY person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) which says to me that every person is someone I can learn from, whether I agree or not.
That requires listening more than talking, and certainly seeking to understand rather than only to be understood. I can only do that if I have respect for others, which is different than saying I have to always agree. But when we listen, we create space for understanding, growth, and unity. There is not a single person I can’t learn something from. And wouldn’t our world be better if everyone was treated with the dignity they deserve?
So humility says I don’t have all the answers and if I only listen to what I already believe, no growth and learning is possible. Even worse, sides will be taken, tribalism will result, and our prayer that His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven, will stand little hope.
It is a dangerous time in our country. Attacks, both with weapons and words, are increasing and the fallout is becoming more serious by the day. As God’s chosen, we are called to be salt and light, to transform the world rather than be transformed by it. So I keep praying and keep respecting all I meet, whether I agree or not. Building bridges instead of walls will always build a better world.
Brave Journey, Bill
